The WaCCliM project is demonstrating how the water sector can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, thus helping to slow down the effects of climate change and global warming. Energy use in the water industry contributes greatly to overall GHG emissions, and WaCCliM aims to help the water sector can make limit global warming to well below 2°C.

The Challenge

WaCCliM project is implemented by GIZ and The International Water Association on behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment. Having such a diverse group of stakeholders, as well as strict government guidelines and standards brought a number of specific UX challenges.

Understanding pain points

To tackle this complex issue, we mapped the entire ecosystem — from water utilities to public sector institutions and policy makers.

Knowing your audience

WaCCliM project has a very specific target audience in mind, both culturally and demographically. To get the message across, we had to dive deep into the industry and learn it’s language, goals and needs.

Designing the experience

Reducing GHG emissions in water utilities is a complex and difficult issue, and presenting it in a concise and visually appealing way was a big challenge to solve

Staying flexible

With a diverse group of stakeholders on board, requirements had to be changed on the fly and often. Staying flexible and agile was paramount for the project’s success

The Impact

With water plants from Thailand to Peru already on board, WaCCliM is already demonstrating it’s efficiency and paving the way towards carbon and energy neutrality —  and a better future for us all.
